Brooks and Dunn
This is the story of how the goats, Brooks and Dunn, died. Just kidding, no one died in this story. I am just a Mom who has watched Tangled one too many time. But this is a crazy story all about how a house warming gift went awry.
The Plan
Back in August when Jake (my brother in law, not to be confused with my husband Jake) and Rachel first moved out to the property it was decided by me, Jake (my husband this time haha) and Jared that we should get them a house welcoming gift. We brainstormed and thought of several things. But ultimately we decided on what I think is the best gift ever.. goats!
Surprise Goats
I started researching and reaching out to a few different farmers and found the perfect pair of goats. They were twin brothers, super sweet and ready to find a new home. They were perfect. As everyone was working out on the property, Jared and I snuck out, claiming we need to pick something up for our kids. Off we went, first to gather all the supplies needed to take care of these goats and then to pick them up.
They were even cuter in person and I fell in love with them right away. The goats were troopers during the trip back to the family to show them off. To say my in laws were surprised would be an understatement. Luckily they thought they were cute too and I just told Rachel and her family that they would be perfect for eating down all the land that they needed to clear. It was a win, win. The next day we helped set up a little home for them and we named them Brooks and Dunn. It was perfect, or so we thought… but the story didn’t end there.
A Tale As Old As Time
With all my reading about goats one thing that was mention a lot was how they were notorious for escaping. I naively thought “Not my goats” haha! I was so wrong. It didn’t take long for them to figure out how to escape. Rachel and Jake were able to get them back a couple of times until one day we got the phone call. Brooks and Dunn were no where to be found. They search high and low and couldn’t find them anywhere. With so much land they could have gone anywhere. I couldn’t give up hope of finding them. The next time we made a trip out to the property I kept an eye out for them, but still, Brooks and Dunn were no where to be seen.
The end of Brooks and Dunn
A couple months went by and we all kinda gave up hope of ever seeing Brooks and Dunn again. My dream of convincing my family that everyone needed goats didn’t last long at all. Then we got another phone call. Rachel and Jake had been out visiting neighbors trying to get to know everyone. Somehow it came up that they use to have a couple of goats that ran away. Crazy enough that sweet neighbor knew what happened to them.
His mom just down the road had found a couple of stray goats, she had taken them in and had been giving the the royal treatment. A quick visit down the road proved that Brooks and Dunn were there, living their best life. So while my dreams of having goats on our property have ended for now, its nice to know that Brooks and Dunn are out there being spoiled as can be. Now to maybe convince them that we need a donkey.
